Respite From Woes Of Life – Hydrosols

Okay, I agree the title might sound a little exaggerated but trust me its not, once you understand, what it is all about. The many problems people have to face because of the proliferating corporate lifestyle today, is dealt with the snap of fingers by natural hydrosols.

The subtle complement to essential oils steam distillation of aromatic plants results in two complementary products: the essential oil and the hydrosol (or hydrolate). During the distillation process the ascending steam dissolves the essential oil contained in the plant, temporarily associating with it in a highly aromatic ethereal oneness of opposite values: water and oil, which normally do not associate. During the following cooling process of this aromatic gas, the oil soluble components separate out from the water. However, the aromatic molecules pass on a part of their qualities to the water, now called the hydrosol.

These hydrosols for a long time were considered as waste products of the process of distilling essential oils (except for a few exceptions like rose water). Only in recent times has it become more and more evident that the hydrosols are also exceptional carriers of the intelligent vibrational impulses of plant life. They represent a more subtle almost homeopathic-like potented ethereal form of the aromatic substances. In addition they contain the water-soluble component of plant life.

This is the most aromatically powerful hydrosol I have ever encountered. (One of my staff commented that she has seen samples of essential oil come through here that were less intense, aromatically.) This is the white sage that has been used for millennium by Native Americans for ritual, smudging and healing. Those sensitive to the energetics of the oils and hydrosols will be amazed by this White Sage water…and find a hundred uses for it.

This powerful hydrosol is distilled from a sacred healing herb, used in Ayurveda medicine to purify the body, mind and spirit. As a room spray it is a wonderful way to clear the air energetically and aromatically.

Using Hydrosols – There, There, Everywhere!

Hydrosols, or call them natural waters, the purest of nature’s secret potions to beauty and health and well being. The hydrosols are very great at handling a number of health related issues that can vary in form.

Hydrosols can be used in place of water in creating natural fragrances, lotions, creams, facial toners and other skin care products. They can also be added to the bath, and used on their own as a light cologne or body spray. Hydrosol can be added to finger bowls for elegant, romantic dinners. Examples of hydrosols are Rose, Roman Chamomile, Neroli and Lavender.

  • Use hydrosols instead of water in your favorite lotion or soap recipe
  • Use as a facial mist or toner, after cleansing.
  • Use soothing hydrosols (comfrey, lemon balm, yarrow) on sunburn, rashes, or to cleanse wounds.
  • Add to your bathwater for a homeopathic bath treatment.
  • Use as a room spray, linen spray, or body spray
  • Use as a hair rinse or scalp treatment – makes a wonderful “leave-in” conditioner
  • Use as a mist for tired, sweaty, feet
  • Add to your humidifier for a pleasant scent
  • Use as a compress for wounds, bruises, or injuries
  • Diluted, soothing hydrosols can be used as a canine or feline ear cleanser. (we love Comfrey for this)
  • Use as a coat spray for dogs
  • Use hydrosols (especially yarrow or comfrey) to soothe itchy canine “hot spots”
  • Essential oils are a “no-no” for cats, but hydrosols are gentle enough to be used on and near your felines. Use it as a ear cleanser, wound wash, gentle coat mist, or to freshen up the litterbox area.
  • Use in your iron instead of water, or as a spray when ironing clothes.
  • Use hydrosols to wash yoga mats, or to deodorize tennis shoes (Mints are great for this!)
  • Hydrosols are a natural compliment to energy work (Reiki, Healing Touch, etc)
  • Cook, bake with, or drink your hydrosols! (Dilute them if you’re going to drink them – 1 tbsp. to a cup of water is a good start, then adjust to taste)

The plant matter used in essential oil distillation imparts the hydrosol with the water-soluble aromatic and therapeutic properties of the plant.

Unlike essential oils that should be diluted prior to application to the skin, hydrosols are much gentler than their essential oil counterparts and can generally be used directly on the skin without further dilution.

The Wonders Of Hydrosols

Hydrosols are no less than magic potions for the human skin. When used in the right manner, hydrosols can be very effective at fighting various skin infections. They are highly antiseptic and therapeutic in nature.

When plant material is steam distilled to produce an essential oil, the water that comes off of that process has a considerable amount of essential oil in it…that water is known as a hydrosol. Some farmers release the water from the distillation back on to the land; for years, it was considered “waste”. But in recent years, the value of this precious liquid has been recognized, so increasingly, more and more farmers are capturing this water and offering it to people like Wisdom of the Earth for medicinal hydrosols. They are very subtle, yet, in aromatherapy, subtle means powerful…so they are a perfect example of this principle.

The spray hydrosols can be used as room fresheners (great between facial or massage clients, in a work space, or in a sick room). Many are excellent skin toners (especially Neroli, Geranium, Helichrysum or Rose) and are wonderful as a finishing touch to facials, or at-home facial treatments.

Essential oils, when kept tightly closed in dark colored bottles and stored away from extreme temperatures, will literally maintain their quality for hundreds, if not thousands of years, with some very few exceptions. In fact, most just get better and better (deeper, more complex aroma). However, hydrosols are considerably more perishable, and need to be stored accordingly.

Some are hardier than others, but it is good to be on the safe side and keep hydrosols from extreme heat and cold, and use them within a one to two year period. While I have had some that retained their quality for several years, it is not something you can count on. In the summer, I store my hydrosols in the refrigerator…this is not only good for them, but makes them wonderfully refreshing if you are spraying them on your face or body.

Medicinally, they are excellent for very small pets such as birds, which have very little body mass. For humans, they are powerful moisturizers and antibacterial sprays for -

  • Burns
  • Cuts
  • Scrapes

Finally, Helichrysum hydrosol is incredible as an eye spray…for eye irritation (from pollen, smoke), eye health problems such as “pink eye” (conjunctivitis), and as a general eye wash.

Hydrosols For All Skins

Whenever the discussion is about skin, the best that can be offered to the skin is nothing but hydrosols. But hydrosols too should be used in certain manner so that give you the best of benefits. They’re wonderful at dealing with skin problems.

Hydrosols are produced during the stream distillation of essential oils. The water-soluble compounds of the plant remain in the distillation water. These gentle waters have many therapeutic properties; they balance the skin’s pH, soothe irritated skin, promote an even skin tone, and hydrate the skin. They are particularly recommended for sensitive skin.

Hydrosols or Distillates as they are often called are the natural “plant waters” or “floral waters” that are produced during steam distillation or hydro-distillation. Hydrosols are wonderful in natural skin care products and can also be used in aromatherapy. To be classified as a distillate or as a hydrosol, these “plant waters” MUST be distilled from botanical material.

In the recent past, distillate water was considered the by-product of essential oil production and was discarded. More recently, these pure distillate waters – also called hydrosols – have been recognized for their own inherent characteristics and qualities. Hydrosols typically represent the water-soluble constituents of the botanical with some volatile components such as the essential oils. Depending on the botanical and the season harvested, our hydrosols contain varying amounts of essential oil.

Aromatherapy is a tree with many branches hydrosols being one of them. The term hydrosol is a combination of -

  • Hydro (water)
  • Sol (solution) — a natural water solution

When essential oils are distilled from plants, hydrosols are the byproduct of the process. Hydrosols cannot be manufactured synthetically.

When plants or flowers are put into the still or distillation tank, they are subjected to boiling water, steam, or both. When the steam hits the plant, the essential oil is released in vapor. The vapor mixes with the steam and is only separated again as the steam cools in the condensing tank. As the steam cools, the essential oil molecules separate from the steam (now as cooled water) and floats to the surface.

The upper layer is the essential oil which floats on the water, except for a few drops which sink—this is the hydrosol. Many people who are chemically sensitive have no problem with hydrosols because it is not a synthetic scent.

The Best 9 Of Hydrosols

Talking about the best of benefits of hydrosols, I have come up with an entire list of benefits of the same. Hydrosols, as a matter of fact, are quite popular in the market, owe that to their many healing and curing properties. Discussing the best of benefits.

  1. Mouthwash: Peppermint or Spearmint Hydrosol is fantasic for mouth care.
  2. Hot Flashes: Mist your face and neck with a cooling hydrosol like Peppermint, Geranium, Lime or Clary Sage hydrosol.
  3. Digestion: Many people add 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil to their water bottles, but given how concentrated essential oils are, that will be too intense for many and it’s easy to add too much. Peppermint hydrosol, on the other hand, is perfect to add to drinking water! Just add a couple of tablespoons of Peppermint hydrosol to a litre of water and you’ve got a great digestive aid. It will give you a refreshing lift.
  4. Bath: Add 1/2 C of your favorite hydrosol for a relaxing bath. My favorites are the flower hydrosols like Rose, Lavender, Clary Sage
  5. Humidifier: Add to your humidifier water to a lovely aroma.
  6. Hair Rinse: After you’ve washed your hair and rinsed the products out, give your hair a final rinse with hydrsol to leave your hair smelling clean and lovely. Your scalp will thank you, too.
  7. Energetically: You an make an energetic spray with any of the hydrosols to help balance your chakras and energy field and give you an emotional lift. Sweetgrass hydrosol is my favorite for this.
  8. Feet: Soak your feet in a cool foot bath with Peppermint or Spearmint hydrosol. Or add to a spray bottle and just give them a cooling mist whenever you want to refresh your “dogs”.
  9. Animal Care: I could do an entire blog post just on the uses of hydrosols for animals. Suffice it to say that where I would never use essential oils on my pets, I wouldn’t hesitate to use hydrosols. You can use hydrosols for hot spots, for washing infected ears, for rinsing fur that has mange (which is a fungal condition), for rinsing wounds and even just cleaning their little faces. My pug Sassy frequently gets a cleaning with hydrosols and a washcloth. Pugs have those charming face wrinkles, but they reallyhold the dirt! I like to wipe her face with chamomile hydrosol. It is even gentle enough to go over her bulging eyes.

They are great for skin that has seen too much sun as well as for -

  • Rashes

Talking about hydrosols individually. Helichrysum is also known as Immortelle or Everlasting. This hydrosol has powerful anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties. It is very helpful after any surgery as it helps to speed the healing of incisions and needle wounds while also helping to reduce swelling and bruising. In skincare it is good for sensitive, mature, or congested skin. It is also used by men before and after shaving to help prevent and/or heal ingrown hairs.

Coming to another very popular hydrosol,Neroli hydrosol, it is very helpful for calming stress as it helps to soothe the central nervous system without causing sleepiness. It is an excellent choice when dealing with hysterical babies or children and is a helpful treatment for sudden shock in adults. In skincare Neroli hydrosol is excellent for delicate, sensitive and oily skin due to its astringent nature. May help to clear acne and minor skin irritations. Hydrosols – Part Of Every Life

Hydrosols or floral waters are amazing liquids that are pretty good at healing and curing many problems. They are used for various purposes, right from taking care of the skin’s health or that of hair. They are extensively used all over the world.

Steam distillation, the most common method of essential oil production, involves the flow of steam into a chamber holding the raw plant material. The steam causes small sacs containing essential oil to burst.

The oil is then carried by the steam out of the chamber and into a chilled condenser, where the steam once again becomes water. (Hydro-distillation is a similar process where the plant material is boiled, with the resultant steam being captured and condensed). The oil and water are then separated; the water, referred to as a ‘hydro-sol’, can be retained as it will have some of the plant essence. Rose hydro-sol, for example, is commonly used for it’s mild antiseptic and soothing properties, as well as it’s pleasing floral aroma.

Hydro-sols are also known as distillates and are byproducts from steam distilling, created while extracting essential oils. Apparently, they are also known as floral waters and the highest quality of hydro-sols come from the distillers who steam the floral and plant material strictly to produce a hydro-sol.

Hydro-sols contain very small doses of the essential oil and have the appearance and consistency of water. They are also said to be extremely safe, even for babies. In fact, they’re so gentle and that’s why they are said to be an excellent ingredient to tone, hydrate, and re-balance the pH of the skin.

Pure hydro-sols are said to be free of additives and preservatives, hence have limited shelf life. There are many types of hydro-sols available and here, you would find a whole list of the different types and their functions for different skin types. Some of them like -

  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Rosemary,

are said to be suitable for all skin types.Hydro-sols, or herbal and floral waters. They are gentle, water-based plant extracts that expand the healing, cosmetic, and culinary applications of aromatherapy.

Hydro-lates are considered to be the homeopathic (diluted) form of Aromatherapy. They are pure water-based solutions which we create by steam distillation of plants from our own organic garden.Hydrolates can be applied directly on the skin or taken internally to treat a variety of medical conditions.

The plants we use impart a wonderful aroma which can linger on your skin and make you feel wonderfully energized.
