The Wonders Of Hydrosols

Hydrosols are no less than magic potions for the human skin. When used in the right manner, hydrosols can be very effective at fighting various skin infections. They are highly antiseptic and therapeutic in nature.

When plant material is steam distilled to produce an essential oil, the water that comes off of that process has a considerable amount of essential oil in it…that water is known as a hydrosol. Some farmers release the water from the distillation back on to the land; for years, it was considered “waste”. But in recent years, the value of this precious liquid has been recognized, so increasingly, more and more farmers are capturing this water and offering it to people like Wisdom of the Earth for medicinal hydrosols. They are very subtle, yet, in aromatherapy, subtle means powerful…so they are a perfect example of this principle.

The spray hydrosols can be used as room fresheners (great between facial or massage clients, in a work space, or in a sick room). Many are excellent skin toners (especially Neroli, Geranium, Helichrysum or Rose) and are wonderful as a finishing touch to facials, or at-home facial treatments.

Essential oils, when kept tightly closed in dark colored bottles and stored away from extreme temperatures, will literally maintain their quality for hundreds, if not thousands of years, with some very few exceptions. In fact, most just get better and better (deeper, more complex aroma). However, hydrosols are considerably more perishable, and need to be stored accordingly.

Some are hardier than others, but it is good to be on the safe side and keep hydrosols from extreme heat and cold, and use them within a one to two year period. While I have had some that retained their quality for several years, it is not something you can count on. In the summer, I store my hydrosols in the refrigerator…this is not only good for them, but makes them wonderfully refreshing if you are spraying them on your face or body.

Medicinally, they are excellent for very small pets such as birds, which have very little body mass. For humans, they are powerful moisturizers and antibacterial sprays for -

  • Burns
  • Cuts
  • Scrapes

Finally, Helichrysum hydrosol is incredible as an eye spray…for eye irritation (from pollen, smoke), eye health problems such as “pink eye” (conjunctivitis), and as a general eye wash.

Hydrosols – Aromatic Magic

The best quality of almost all essential oils and hydrosols is that they possess a catchy fragrance. That is precisely one reason why most of the hydrosols are extensively used in fragrance products.

Hydrosols are the aromatic waters that condense in the collecting vessel during steam distillation. They contain minute amounts of the essential oil, so hydrosols are very safe and gentle. Many hydrosols can be sprayed near the eyes, taken as drinks, sprayed on the skin, amongst other uses.

Benefits of hydrosols include the potential action of some of the water-soluble components found in the parent plant – and so are perfect for cleansing around ears and eyes and other delicate areas – but not strong enough for ticks, fleas, and strong coat and paw cleaning. A number of essential oils have been used in veterinary work for many, many years – way before other pharmaceuticals were available.

Be careful though with using concentrated preparations near eyes and noses – ocular and respiratory membranes may not react well to some essential oils. Use low dose first – then build up depending on the result you want. Less is still often more even with dogs – although cleaning a wound, deterring fleas and ticks, combatting fungal infections for example will likely require relatively high concentrations to be effective.

Less concentrated than pure essential oils, these fragrant waters are produced during the steam distillation process. Each hydrosol has specific therapeutic benefits depending on the plant it was derived from. Organic hydrosols are saturated with the scent and essence of these oils and can gently do a lot for the skin or hair -

▪                Hydrate

▪                Refresh

▪                Nurture

Hydrosols contain a wide range of therapeutic compounds which makes them highly effective for treating various health concerns. In Ayurvedic medicine aromatic waters are called arkas; they are consumed as drinks for their therapeutic benefits, especially for digestive disorders.

Because hydrosols are water-based products, they have a shorter shelf life than essential oils. Please keep all hydrosols refrigerated to extend their shelf life.

Hydrosols – For Uncommon Services

Hydrosols are wonderful solutions, and solutions in the true and literal sense of the word. They are used for a number of health related problems. They are best for the skin and skin infections. They are mild and can easily, without fear, can be applied on skin.

During a distillation, both the chemistry of the essential oil and the chemistry of the hydrosol are continually changing. Just as there are chemotypes of essential oils so there is parallel chemotypes of hydrosols. If bottled in sterile containers directly at the still, the hydrosol or aromatic distillate should have a shelf life of at least 1 year.

In my collection, however, I have healthy hydrosols that were distilled as early as 1995. Only the consumer should dilute the hydrosol with plain or distilled water and just before using. Any water added before this will dilute the hydrosol and enable contaminants such as mold and mildews to enter. All containers that will receive the hydrosol should be rinsed with a 10% Clorox solution. Peroxide or alcohol will not work as well.

After the rinsing with Clorox, then the containers should be carefully rinsed with boiling water to remove any Clorox odor. They should be filled and sealed immediately, and shipped directly to the marketer. At this point, the marketer should store the hydrosols in a cold room at about 55° F.

Remember that the hydrosol, the essential oil and the plant extract may all have different properties. An herbal extract may have certain therapeutic properties and uses, while the hydrosol of the same herb or the essential oil of the same herb may have entirely different properties. For instance, Oregano herb is delicious when added to spaghetti as an important ingredient, more on this -

  • It can also be used as a compress for aching muscles where it acts as a mild analgesic (pain-killer)
  • The herbal extract is used by capsules as an antiseptic for the digestive system
  • The essential oil with its phenols of carvacrol and thymol can be considered as an anti-infective by inhalation while the hydrosol is antiseptic by application

For cleaning the baby, you can make natural antiseptic wipes from diaper wipes or paper towels. Cut large paper towels in half, and put into a container. Add Camomile hydrosol. For teething, you can make a spray using a mister bottle and spritz into the mouth when the baby begins to feel pain from newly erupting teeth. For all ages and all skin care – Spray and wipe as a cleanser before or to remove makeup.

Floral Waters On Top

Floral waters are wonderful liquid solutions that are used for a number of reasons, ranging right from the application of floral waters on skin to the absolute consumption of these, in certain cases. They are mild and natural in nature.

Rose water has many healing benefits for the skin but when taken internally, it can promote all sorts of well being for your insides too. Rose water can be made into an icy and refreshing drink that is rich in anti-oxidants, flavonoids and many essential vitamins like A, C, D, E and niacin. Drinking rose water on occasion is said to increase sexual desire and put the mind at ease. One cold glass of rosy water makes for a heart-healthy tonic that cleanses the body while aiding in proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. Historically, rose pedals are well known for being one of Queen Cleopatra’s best kept beauty secrets.

It is known that she used rose water in many facial masks to maintain her youthful, glowing skin. Rose blossoms work to meld the tones and textures from their pedals into your skin, smoothing out fine lines and evening colors. Rose water helps to boost elasticity and collagen while also helping to hide the appearance of veins in the upper layers of skin. Furthermore, The rose blossom makes for a powerful natural soothing agent and healing emollient that has potent anti-inflammatory properties.

This makes them good for healing burns, rashes, bites, and many other malformed skin reactions, even those brought on by allergies or other plants. Rose pedal water works to heal the skin and promotes healthy skin cell regeneration. Not to mention, the aroma of roses is known to be a highly potent aphrodisiac.

Unlike essential oils that should be diluted prior to application to the skin, hydrosols are much gentler than their essential oil counterparts and can generally be used directly on the skin without further dilution.

Hydrosols can be used in place of water in creating natural fragrances, lotions, creams, facial toners and other skin care products. They can also be added to the bath, and used on their own as a light cologne or body spray. Hydrosol can be added to finger bowls for elegant, romantic dinners. Examples of hydrosols are -

  • Rose
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Neroli
  • Lavender

Right Conceptions About Floral Waters

Talking of hydrosols or floral waters for that matter, there are certain things a person can be absolutely sure of and they are floral waters are wonderful and pure solutions and are hence used for a number of purposes.

Flower water and floral water are descriptive, but now outdated terms, used to describe the condensate water that remains after the extraction of an essential oil by water or steam distillation. When essential oils are produced this way, not all of the aromatic and healing principles held within the plant are actually captured in the essential oil.

Certain components are hydrophilic, which means they dissolve into water, and this produces what is variously known as -

  • Flower water
  • Hydro-sol
  • Hydro-late

What ever you choose to call it, the resulting fragrant water contains the very essence of everything that was contained within the plant when it was still alive and growing.

The terms flower or floral waters are misleading since these miracle waters can be produced from herbs, needles, leaves, woods, barks and seeds. In aromatherapy, these products are more commonly referred to as hydro-sols, and this is the term that we prefer to use for our range.

This is because increasingly today, many ‘flower waters’ are made from synthetic compounds which smell quite pretty but posses absolutely no healing properties! In fact, quite the opposite they can cause skin irritation.

Others are produced by adding essential oils or absolutes to water by using alcohol or some other type of dispersant or solvent. This may appear to be perfectly acceptable, since the finished product contains essential oil and has a pleasant fragrance similar to a natural hydro-sol.

However, this type of reconstituted product lacks the wealth of vital healing properties present in a true hydro-sol, – remember, many of the plant constituents were dissolved into the water whilst extracting the oil, so they were never present in the essential oil in the first place.

Therefore adding an essential oil to water will never create a product with the same range of healing benefits as a true hydro-sol. There is simply no substitute for a true hydro-sol, so be vigilant for yourself, because ‘purity’ can never be replaced.

Availability Of Hydrosols

Conisdering that hydrosols are actually sacred, the availability of some of these signs is quite uncertain. Hydrosols are absolutely organic and pure in nature and that the the prime reason, everyone tends to have a bend for hydrosols rather than other natural oils.

Lemon Verbena Hydrosol – (Aloysia triphylla) is unavailable on the open market but is being privately produced in California from organically grown leaves and distilled in an ancient alchemist copper alembic in the Mendocino hills. This hydrosol is lovely and useful for the most sensitive skin, to degrease teenager acneic skin, to heal minor skin imperfections, to take internally as a sleep aid or to soothe an upset stomach. It also has much use as a spritz to soothe the psyche.

But the hydrosol is being produced from organically grown plants in California. This wonderful, fresh, lemon-scented water is used for sensitive aging skin, or sprayed down the throat for many kinds of throat infections. It has therapeutic and anti-microbial action. Wonderful as a facial spritz, for hot flashes or in the summer to cool the skin.Taking some specific hydrosols and availability in mind -

  • Yarrow Flower Hydrosol is wonderful as an astringent and anti-inflammatory for reactive skin. It is a wonderful non-sweet scent that is acceptable to the most discriminatory scent-conscious.
  • Melissa (Lemon-Mint) Hydrosol is not available in its true form. The essential oil is one of the most adulterated on the market and when available at all.

Other hydrosols that are available are: Myrtle hydrosol for infected or irritated eyes; Rosemary Verbenon and Thyme linalol hydrosol for dry skin; Chamomile or A. arborescens for sensitive skin and abnormal growth; Lavender hydrosol for soothing and easing mental tensions; Marjoram hydrosol for soothing the stomach; Rose hydrosol (commonly called Rosewater) for cooking, as a spritzfor all facial types, with glycerin as a hand lotion, in alcohol beverages; Orange flower water in beverages and for mature skin.

There is a way to mimic a true hydrosol. Add 2 – 3 drops of essential oil to 1 quart of pure or distilled water. Shake daily for two weeks and bottle into small containers. Be aware that in no way does a water based essence such as this truly duplicate the qualities of a true hydrosol.
