Availability Of Hydrosols

Conisdering that hydrosols are actually sacred, the availability of some of these signs is quite uncertain. Hydrosols are absolutely organic and pure in nature and that the the prime reason, everyone tends to have a bend for hydrosols rather than other natural oils.

Lemon Verbena Hydrosol – (Aloysia triphylla) is unavailable on the open market but is being privately produced in California from organically grown leaves and distilled in an ancient alchemist copper alembic in the Mendocino hills. This hydrosol is lovely and useful for the most sensitive skin, to degrease teenager acneic skin, to heal minor skin imperfections, to take internally as a sleep aid or to soothe an upset stomach. It also has much use as a spritz to soothe the psyche.

But the hydrosol is being produced from organically grown plants in California. This wonderful, fresh, lemon-scented water is used for sensitive aging skin, or sprayed down the throat for many kinds of throat infections. It has therapeutic and anti-microbial action. Wonderful as a facial spritz, for hot flashes or in the summer to cool the skin.Taking some specific hydrosols and availability in mind -

  • Yarrow Flower Hydrosol is wonderful as an astringent and anti-inflammatory for reactive skin. It is a wonderful non-sweet scent that is acceptable to the most discriminatory scent-conscious.
  • Melissa (Lemon-Mint) Hydrosol is not available in its true form. The essential oil is one of the most adulterated on the market and when available at all.

Other hydrosols that are available are: Myrtle hydrosol for infected or irritated eyes; Rosemary Verbenon and Thyme linalol hydrosol for dry skin; Chamomile or A. arborescens for sensitive skin and abnormal growth; Lavender hydrosol for soothing and easing mental tensions; Marjoram hydrosol for soothing the stomach; Rose hydrosol (commonly called Rosewater) for cooking, as a spritzfor all facial types, with glycerin as a hand lotion, in alcohol beverages; Orange flower water in beverages and for mature skin.

There is a way to mimic a true hydrosol. Add 2 – 3 drops of essential oil to 1 quart of pure or distilled water. Shake daily for two weeks and bottle into small containers. Be aware that in no way does a water based essence such as this truly duplicate the qualities of a true hydrosol.

Most Sought-After Hydrosols

Hydrosolsare wonderful antural solutions that are used for a number of purposes. They are very natural and mild and even healing and curing in nature, and these qualities give them the ability to fight various kinds of infections.

Lemon Verbena hydrosol

The essential oil is a sedative and fever reducer, anti-viral and a digestive aid that reduces the appetite. The essential oil is very expensive, this hydrosol is worth using as a replacement where you can. Try adding the hydrosol to a babies bath for the fever reducing and sedating effects. Add a tablespoon to a tea and increase the relaxation and centering that some of us get from a mug of our favorite. A good gargle or mouthwash to use after dental surgery, it’s anti-inflammatory and clean tasting. Slightly acidic and makes a nice skin toner or aftershave. The smell is not floral or fruity. It would be interesting to use in -

  • Foods
  • Maybe to thin a pan sauce after sauteing fish

Melissa Hydrosol

Also called Lemon Balm. This hydrosol is rather stable. Steam distillation of Melissa plant material yields a small amount of oil. This can mean that Melissa hydrosol smells very weak. Some distillers cohobate the waters because of this. Melissa hydrosol would be best used to calm and reduce anxiety consumed in a 3% dilution. Melissa has traditionally been used internally as a digestive and calmative. I would suggest this be taken through the day or night rather than all at once. This could be added to a babies bath. Can be used undiluted on the face to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory properties. Use undiluted on a herpes outbreak while taking internally as well. Make a cream with this hydrosol for after sun care.

Moroccan Rose

There are many different kinds of Roses and they are reflected in the hydrosols. The water is lovely and really is a perfume in itself. There are widely varying degrees of quality that are due to distillation process, raw material as well as the storage and handling of the finished product. It is mildly antiseptic and is very humectant. It is a great addition to any skin care product.

Neroli Hydrosol

For all ages, inside and out. A stress reducer, very calming. Antispasmodic for the digestive system. Antibacterial and antifungal as well. It is a great toner for the face, clearing the complexion. It is an astringent and can be drying if used full strength daily on the skin.

Hydrosols Placed High

These wonderful hydrosols are placed in a very high position, owing to the number of benefits it does to the skin and body. They’re are pretty good at being used against various kinds of infections and diseases.

Hydro-sols are highly versatile and can be used for personal care and around the house. In skincare, Rose, Orange Blossom (Neroli) and Lavender hydro-sols are great for hydrating dry skin and cooling hot and sensitized skin. If you have been out in the sun too long and got burned, Lavender hydro-sol is soothing and comforting as well as healing. Used in the final rinse after shampooing hydro-sols help to condition hair and add a shine.

There ain’t a single, more natural way out from puffiness under eyes and dark circles, than hydro-sols, precisely Chamomile. Just soak two cotton wool pads with the hydro-sol and cover each eye for around 10 minutes for an immediate and dramatic reduction in puffiness. Regular use can help diminish those dreaded dark circles too.

During the summer hydro-sols are perfect to use as a cooling body mist, and the most cooling of all is Peppermint. Make sure you take some with you to use on holidays, on the beach and even to cool those aching tootsies when you are out shopping! Hydro-sols help to revitalize you when your energies are beginning to flag, and a few sprays onto a tissue makes a handy wet-wipe for all sorts of applications including babies and grubby children.

To calm a restless baby try adding a few tablespoons of Lavender or Chamomile hydro-sol into their bathwater. This can be especially beneficial if your baby is suffering from nappy rash or eczema, because the soothing properties of these hydro-sols help -

  • Calm the irritation
  • Speed up the healing process

Hydro-sols are quite safe to use on young children, and since they only contain a small amount of essential oil they do not need diluting much further except as above when using with very young babies.

Hydro-sols such as Rose or Neroli can be added to the final rinse water in your washing cycle as well as used as a fragrant linen spray whilst ironing since they smell much nicer than their synthetic counterparts. Around the house, hydro-sols are great to freshen the air instead of using aerosols which of course are harmful to the environment.

Neroli hydrosol acts as a wonderful respite for the ones suffering from skin infections. A lot has been written about hydrosols and is still being done, owe it to the fact that hydrosols have n number of properties.

Neroli oil is a commonly used essential oil that usually is pale yellow and watery. It is derived from bitter orange blossoms. The oil is used for both its aroma and its therapeutic benefits. This essential oil is also sometimes used in commercial fragrances.

Bitter orange refers to widely cultivated citrus trees with several varieties. Neroli oil is derived from the subspecies called amara. The oil is produced from the blossoms of these trees. Floral Waters For The Good In Life

Floral waters are used for n number of purposes. They are mild and healing in nature. When applied on the skin with or without any combination, they can do wonders. Floral waters are right for almost all age groups.

Floral waters are obtained via plant distillation using a water steam process. Two complementary products are a result of this distillation: the essential oil and floral water. The latter is, in fact, the steam collected, charged with certain molecules from the original plant that was distilled. Finally, once cooled, there is water condensation.

The hydrolate (distilled aromatic water) is collected at the exit of the still, just like the essential oil, and it contains, in a naturally dissolved and less concentrated form, active components of the plant as its essential oil. In conclusion, after the distillation of an aromatic plant, two products can be obtained: the essential oil and the floral water which will float on top of the former.

The quality of distillation – at a low temperature, low pressure and for a long enough duration – is reflected in the quality of the floral water as is the case for essential oils. Floral water is also called Hydrolate. It is important to verify if it is a genuine floral water, not to be confused with certain products presenting themselves in the form of water to which a small amount of essential oil is added, or worse, containing artificial aromas, therefore producing a product of inferior quality, without the same beneficial properties.

Hydrosols water is the water that remains after production of an essential oil via steam or the process of water distillation. The water which is used for the oil distillation has a wonderful aroma and even has some medicinal properties in it. The hydrosol also offers some therapeutic benefits and is also widely used for aromatherapy purposes.

There are certain plants which are distilled for the hydrosol instead of the by-product that they produce. However, it is always useful to have a sound knowledge about the hydrosols. Keep in mind that sometimes water, blended with essential oils is sold by vendors as floral water or hydrosols waters. This is fake water; so always be sure to ask the specifics about the floral water that is on sale.

Hydrosols are essentially used to create facial toners and other skin products. They can also be used for bathing, or as a light cologne or body spray. Some of the most commonly used hydrosols include -

  • Rose
  • Roman chamomile
  • Neroli
  • Lavender

Hydrosols – Earthy Wonders

The best a man can resort to in times of dire natural needs is natural potions that earth keeps in store for us in different forms. Hydrosols are the purest and most natural forms of liquids that can keep n number of problems, surrounding the body, at bay.

Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates are produced from steam-distilling plant materials.

The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans are all known to have made great use of hydrosols for their healing and aesthetic properties alongside their infusions and unguents. See, hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. The plant matter used in essential oil distillation imparts an incredulously addicting aroma to its remaining water. Now supercharged with deeply active elements from the essence of the plant, this ready-to-use hydrosol offers a misty and therapeutic way to deliver a wide range of soothing skin benefits you’ve come to expect from face and body oils. Some plants are even specifically distilled for the resulting hydrosol instead of the hydrosol being simply a byproduct of the distillation.

Unlike their “essential oil added to water” counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the nutritional components that whole plant materials have to offer. Gentle hydrosols are water soluble & can be used directly on the skin without further dilution. Some brands will use hydrosols in place of water when creating -

  • Natural fragrances
  • Oils
  • Creams
  • Balms
  • Facial toners

And for that matter even many other skin care products to bring even higher grades of purity to their prducts. For fun, they can also be added to the bath and even be used on their own as a light cologne or body spray on pulse points if the fragrance is heady enough.

Some of these variations are produced by adding essential oils or absolutes to water and using alcohol, dispersant or solvents. But, know this – the richest hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production.

As such, the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosols, such as copper stills and processed through certified organic methods. Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils but in a milder form; making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils might be too strong for daily use. In most hydrosols there is less than 5% actual oil.

Hydrosols – Lightening Lives

Whenever the talk is about hydrosols, one does not know from where to start and where to make a stop, same is my dilemma. Hydrosols are the purest of liquid potions knwon to mankind. Some are highly antiseptic in nature.

Hydrosols are a by-product of the steam distillation process that produces the essential oils we use, and a safe, gentle, and less expensive alternative to the oils as well. During the distillation process that yields the Essential Oils (EOs), the steam containing the oils is chilled, thus turning into water, with a layer of EO floating on top.

The EO’s are skimmed off and bottled for our use. In some cases the remaining water is just discarded. However, this water contains both minute molecules of the Essential Oil, as well as all the water soluble elements of the plant that are not present in the Oil.

Hydrosols have many uses. They can compliment the EO’s, as well as extend the scope of the oils themselves. They also allow us to experience some of the benefits of, for example, true Bulgarian Rose oil at a much more affordable price. Hydrosols are a less expensive way to ‘back up’ the EO’s that you use.

True, natural hydrosols contain no preservatives, should be treated as perishable, and constantly stored under refrigeration to maintain -

  • Freshness
  • Sterility

Shelf life varies based on a number of unpredictable factors including storage, age, and sometimes even the particular crop in a particular year. For safety, keep hydrosols refrigerated, and watch for any changes that might indicate the product has gone bad. Remember, true hydrosols are natural, preservative free products.

Like for example, Rose Hydrosol is both a facial toner and a wonderful linen spray. Lavender or Chamomile Hydrosols can soothe a sunburn or also function as a relaxing ‘monster spray’ to banish night-time monsters or bad dreams for children. Chilled Peppermint Hydrosol is the ultimate summer cooler, either spritzed on, or a bit added to a bottle of spring water.

Rose Geranium hydrosol is said to calm “power surges” of energy. Melissa Hydrosol is a wonderful ‘blotter’ for oily skin and contains antiviral properties. Witch Hazel or Tea Tree hydrosols both make gentle antibacterial toners for skin with acne.
